NEW INFORMATION ABOUT IPECAC SYRUP
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that syrup of ipecac no longer be used routinely as a home treatment to induce vomiting. For years, many families kept a bottle of ipecac in their home in case a child had swallowed a poisonous substance. Ipecac was recommended for use only on the advice of a doctor or poison control center.

Recent research failed to show that children benefited from being treated with ipecac. Evidence suggests syrup of ipecac may be unreliable and relatively ineffective in preventing poison from entering a child's bloodstream, and can also cause unwanted side affects. The American Academy of Pediatrics stresses that prevention is the best defense. The poison control center phone number is 1-800-222-1222.
